Awards and Albums

KAYAMBA AFRICA was one of the first Kenya groups to submit their video entry to the 2002 KORA all Africa Music Awards. Fortunately enough they were nominated for a KORA Award in the Best Traditional Category. Even though they did not win a LORA Award in 2002, they proved that their music has what it takes to get categorized with the best of the continent. We have produced a couple of videos and two CD ’s.

1. Mang’ondo:
Luhya folk song, sang during wedding activities to encourage people to shower the wedded couple with gifts.

2. Wakariru: A Kikuyu traditional song on the coming of rain. It told of its advent so the village should prepare by keeping await the crops and livestock because the rain will drop with sound like tu, tu, tu!

3. Nkere :
“It is so”, a Kisii folk song describing the events of a prolonged drought that devoured the land.”Ekebwe” its coming.

4. Miri:
A Pokomo lullaby cum initiation song that is sung during such ceremonies in the Tana River based community. It describes how they find little fish in the river when they go fishing.

5. Sweet Elizabeth
: A wacky arrangement of the song by ‘Roger’ from Sierra Leon done in 4 Kenyan languages on a love torn man whose love has left for a friend.

6. Mulunya:
A Kiswahili song, composed by the late George Mukabi on the disadvantages of owning a ‘scooter’.

7. Auma : A Lou love song, composed by T. Juma on the virtues of a beautiful girl. Sang in traditional Ohangla style.

8. Kiti Kiti:
A Maasai praise song performed to show off how beautiful their livestock is compared to a rival community. Performed in accapella style.

9.Omuntun: A Kalenjin praise song for leaders and gives thanks to God for keeping the well! “kongo”

10.Ngulo:
A Kamba song that castigates the village villain for damaging pumpkins. He is asked to pay for the damage.

11.Amalwa:
A Luyha folk song that advised on the danger of bottled alcohol. It’s as bitter as ‘pili pili’ pepper. Done in a modern fusion style.

12.Nalale Mghanghe:
A Taita song describing the adventures of a young man as he traversed the town of Mghanghe in taita
